Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel in Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, marking a significant milestone in enhancing all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and the strategic region of Ladakh ¹. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Dr. Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah .
The 6.5-kilometer-long, two-lane bi-directional tunnel has been constructed at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore and is equipped with a parallel 7.5-metre-wide escape passage for emergencies ¹. Situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, the tunnel will bypass landslide and avalanche routes, ensuring safer and uninterrupted access to the strategically important Ladakh region.
This engineering feat is expected to boost tourism in Sonamarg, making it a year-round destination and promoting winter sports ¹. The tunnel’s construction is also a testament to the workers who toiled in harsh conditions, and Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to meet and acknowledge their contribution.
