IIT Madras Develops Revolutionary Ramjet Technology to Enhance Artillery Range

Nasik – Staff Reporter

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has successfully developed a groundbreaking ramjet propulsion system that enables Bofors and Dhanush howitzers, as well as other 155mm artillery guns, to fire shells at targets 15-20 kilometers beyond their standard range. This innovative technology can be integrated into standard artillery shells, allowing them to reach distances of up to 60 kilometers.

The development of this technology is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Army’s artillery firepower. The School of Artillery in Devlali recently organized its annual program, “Topchi,” focusing on modernizing the artillery regiment. The indigenous technology developed by IIT Madras is anticipated to substantially increase the range of artillery guns, making them more lethal.

The Defense Ministry had entrusted IIT Madras with researching methods to enhance the range of artillery guns. The institution has developed a specialized ramjet shell that can be fitted into the rear section of an artillery shell. The shell contains a propellant that ignites when the shell is fired, generating additional power and increasing the range.

According to researchers at IIT Madras, this technology will revolutionize the artillery regiment’s firepower capabilities. The artillery regiment, a combat support arm of the Indian Army, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. With its arsenal of guns, mortars, rocket launchers, and surveillance systems, the regiment plays a crucial role in supporting ground operations.

The successful testing of the ramjet technology at the School of Artillery’s firing range marks a significant milestone. Further improvements and additional testing are underway. This technology can be integrated into artillery shells, enhancing their range. Researchers claim that this technology is currently unmatched globally, and experts believe it has the potential to transform warfare.

The enhanced range of artillery guns, made possible by the ramjet technology, can provide a significant advantage on the battlefield.
