Donald Trump’s Inauguration as 47th US President Sparks Interest in India

Donald Trump is set to be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States today, January 20, 2025. This significant event has generated interest in India, with many wondering how Trump’s presidency will impact India-US relations.

Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, was asked if Trump’s presidency would be beneficial for India. Puri diplomatically responded, “If you are in a world of diplomacy, you never say good or bad.” He emphasized that it is up to the people of a country to decide their leader and that India welcomes doing business with the US.

Puri also highlighted Trump’s good chemistry with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Trump has worked with people in India and that he has known him for many years. Puri mentioned that he had met Trump several times, including when he lived in the World Trump Tower.

The India-US relationship is strong on a bipartisan basis, according to Puri. However, he noted that Trump’s victory will need to be evaluated in terms of trade policy and other areas.

Trump’s inauguration ceremony will take place indoors due to extremely cold temperatures in Washington, D.C. The event will feature a guest list of prominent politicians, former presidents, and influential business leaders, including Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. Country music star Carrie Underwood will perform “America the Beautiful” during the ceremony ¹.
